The Azores is a Portuguese archipelago composed of nine volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean, located between North America and Europe.
The islands are ideally situated on the routes that connect both Continents. The Gulf Stream’s influence provides a year round temperature climate which together with the island’s naturally fertile soil gives the countryside an exuberant lush and diversified vegetation – fields of hydrangeas, azaleas, camelias, hibiscus and magnolia flowers can be found everywhere on the island.
The Azorean landscape is composed of contrasts, such as the powerful mountains that are divided by deep valleys and winding ravines and convey a scenery of rare and unforgettable beauty. The volcanic eruptions responsible for the formation of the archipelago are evident throughout the Island of São Miguel.
The “caldeiras” are hot boiling springs a constant reminder of the island’s volcanic origins.
The local gastronomy of superb seafood trays are a resplendent array of freshly caught fish specialities.
The “cozido das Furnas” is an original dish of meats and vegetables that are lowered underground the hot springs where they are left to simmer to perfection by the earth’s natural thermal heat. High quality certified meats, various pork and beef sausages.
Local wines, pineapple and passion fruit liquors with prize winning medals from international events are very popular.
The mild and invigorating climate in the Azores encourages sportive activities year round principally golf.
Also water sports including swimming, wind-surfing, sailing and deep sea sport fishing. Clear water beaches (sea average temperature 16º to 24ºC) beckon the visitor to explore the island’s coast, scuba diving snorkeling and spear fishing which are equally inviting.
In São Miguel everyone can appreciate the landscape beauty whether walking or on horseback.
São Miguel, the island where Furnas and Batalha Golf Courses are situated, is also called “the Green Island” because of the green pasture lands and the abundant mountain forests.
São Miguel is the most populated island of the entire archipelago and represents 50% of the total population. It has a surface of 760 km2 with a maximum length of 65 kms and a width of 14 kms.
It is part of the Oriental Group of Islands. São Miguel is the largest Island of the archipelago and is one of the principal lines of communication with the rest of the world.
The airport, which is about 3 kms from the centre of Ponta Delgada, provides daily, service to Europe via Lisbon and twice a week to U.S.A. and Canada, as well as regular inter-island flights.
From whichever location you arrive, you will find São Miguel full of natural beauty which will satisfy the most demanding traveller.
